Abbeyfeale For Axel 5K Run/2K Walk

Abbeyfeale for Axel: A Community United

On May 12, 2022, little Axel came into the world at University Hospital Kerry, facing tremendous odds. Born with multiple congenital abnormalities and diagnosed with PIK3CA-related overgrowth syndromes, including CLOVES and Klippel-Trenaunay Syndrome, Axel is one of fewer than 200 people globally with these rare conditions. Despite the challenges, Axel’s spirit and his family’s determination shine through. A fundraiser, spearheaded by Dora Broderick, was organized to help support Axel’s extensive medical needs, ensuring he receives the treatments necessary to surpass his initial prognosis.

I was honored to be asked by Dora, her husband Mick, and Joe Weir from Abbeyside Strength and Conditioning to contribute by organizing a 5K run and 2K walk in support of Axel. Planning began weeks in advance to ensure every detail was perfect. We mapped out the routes, double-checked logistics, and were eager for the big day to arrive.

When it finally did on Sunday 15th of September, we were blessed with beautiful weather. At 10 a.m., the community gathered, and with smiles on their faces, participants set off for Axel, putting one foot in front of the other with love and determination. After the run, it was heartwarming to witness the joy, laughter, and sense of unity among everyone there.

We were thrilled to raise nearly €1,400 from the run alone, but that was just the beginning of the day’s events. The fun continued with games for the kids on the rugby field and over 30 stands showcasing local businesses and initiatives. The support was overwhelming, with the local community stepping up in a way that truly reflects the heart of Abbeyfeale.

From Flexitime’s perspective, we were grateful to play a small part in such a worthy cause. However, the real heroes of the day were Dora, Mick, and Katelyn, who worked tirelessly to make the event a success. Their dedication and love for Axel were evident, and they should be incredibly proud of what they accomplished. We’re certain the Horgan family felt the community’s embrace and the outpouring of support.

This day was a testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together for a cause. Axel’s journey is far from over, but with people like those in Abbeyfeale standing by his side, there is hope.

Please leave your thoughts below in the comments and let us know what you thought of the day 😀
